Mittens perched atop the ancient oak, her amber eyes scanning the twilight-drenched village. Below, the festival lights twinkled like stars stranded on earth, and the aroma of roasted fish wafted upwards, a tantalizing taunt to her feline senses. Tonight was the Night of Whiskers, a peculiar event where, legend had it, one cat in the vicinity was granted a wish. Whisper, the wise old Siamese, had always scoffed at such tales, labeling them "human nonsense." But Mittens, with her adventurous heart, couldn't resist the allure. As the clock tower struck midnight, a shimmering light enveloped her. "Choose," a voice echoed in the crisp air, as real as the moon's glow. Mittens thought of the cozy fireside, of Whisper's arthritic limp, and then, of the countless cold strays. Her heart made up, she meowed, "I wish for warmth and comfort for all my kind." The light flickered joyously and faded. The next morning, the villagers found their homes inexplicably filled with plush beds and bowls. Even Whisper had to admit, as he settled into a new cushioned nook, that perhaps there was something magical about those old feline tales after all. And Mittens? She watched it all, her heart as warm as the hearths she had conjured.
