Video - United in Battle: The Duel that United Enemies against the Ottomans
Even though the European Christian world constantly fought among themselves, they were always united as one against the Ottomans. During the First Siege of Vienna, a German and a Portuguese officer of the Crusader army defending the city had an argument in the evening over an issue, and in the morning they challenged each other to a duel on the walls. In the morning, they went up to the walls in the presence of everyone, and just as they drew their swords, Ottoman artillery fire started and Ottoman soldiers attacked through the breach opened in that part of the walls. During this artillery fire, the right arm of the German officer and the left arm of the Portuguese were severed. These two enemies came side by side against the Ottoman soldiers attacking inside and stood together as one body. They started to fight against the Ottoman soldiers with their swords, one in their left hand and the other in their right hand. Finally, they too fell among the martyred Ottoman soldiers.
