Lila's heartbeat echoed in the dark, oppressive silence. Moonlight slivered through her curtains, casting monstrous shadows. She pulled the covers tight, but a low growl from beneath the bed froze her. Fingers trembling, she leaned over the edge. A hand, skeletal and cold, shot out, clamping around her wrist. She screamed, but no sound escaped. The thing's eyes—glowing, hungry—met hers, pulling her into a void of endless night. Lila's last thought was of her mother, who'd warned, "Never look under the bed." In the morning, all that remained was a single, icy handprint on the floor, whispering of horrors unseen.
