In sixth grade, we relentlessly tormented Mr. Mahoney, a nervous substitute teacher, with escalating pranks until he left, humiliated and never to return. Our final prank, involving a fake emergency and a clown mask, pushed him to the brink, leaving him shaken and defeated. Years later, encountering a disheveled man who resembled Mr. Mahoney made me reflect on our cruelty and its consequences. As he struggled to light a cigarette, I wondered if his suffering had been a form of cosmic retribution. Despite dismissing the idea of curses, I couldn’t shake the guilt for what we had done.
