Paid twenty cents a day and half a beer weekly, Jack never made a single mistake in his entire career. He assisted a paraplegic signalman named James "Jumper" Wide, who lost his legs in a railway accident. Trained by Wide, Jack learned to operate railway signals with remarkable precision. Jack's reliability and accuracy made him famous, and he became a legend in the railway industry. When Jack passed away in 1890, his skull was preserved at the Albany Museum in Grahamstown, South Africa, as a tribute to his unique contributions.
