Did you know that in 1603, King James I of England banned dueling because he thought it was awful? But then in 1777, Benjamin Franklin wrote a letter to a friend where he suggested that the duel could be a way to resolve political disputes. Dueling then became popular in the United States and France in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. People fought duels over everything from love affairs to political disagreements. Some famous historical figures, including Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr, even died in duels. Isn't it crazy how things changed over time?
