Video - The Conquest of Kanije: Ibrahim Pasha's Legacy
At the meeting where Tiryaki Hasan Pasha was present, it was decided to conquer Kanije, which always posed a danger. The castle, which was besieged for more than forty days, was handed over to Ibrahim Pasha after losing hope for help from one side and fire falling into the gunpowder cellar of the castle on the other. This place was given to Tiryaki Hasan Pasha as a beylerbeyi. The fall of Kanije, one of the important border fortresses of the Austrians, was a great blow to the enemy. The Sultan, who was very pleased with this success, congratulated him in the imperial line he sent to Grand Vizier Ibrahim Pasha and promised that he would remain in his position as long as he was alive. With this conquest, Ibrahim Pasha received the title of Kanije Conqueror. Damad Ibrahim Pasha gained the deep love of the soldiers, border veterans and local people with the measures he took in the frontier, and eliminated the public order that had been going on in this region since the beginning of the Austrian wars. While my grand vizier and supreme commander, Ibrahim Pasha, was preparing for the campaign in Belgrade, on the other hand, he gave instructions and sent his vassals, Mehmed Agha and Murad Pasha, to Budin to meet for peace if necessary. However, after a while, Ibrahim Pasha became ill and passed away on July 10, 1601. After the funeral prayer was performed in the camp, his body was transferred to Belgrade and then brought to Istanbul and buried in the mausoleum built on the front of the Şehzade Mosque facing the street.
