Did you know that the Battle of Verdun in 1916 was one of the longest and deadliest battles of World War I? It lasted for 300 days and nights, with over 700,000 casualties, and was fought between French and German forces. The French soldiers, known as "Poilus," meaning "hairy ones," due to their rugged appearance, had to endure brutal conditions and constant artillery fire. At one point, the Germans even used flamethrowers in their attempts to break through French lines.
