Did you know In 1896, Ethiopia made history at the Battle of Adwa, making it the only African nation to defeat an European colonial power. Facing Italian forces intent on colonization, Emperor Menelik II united diverse Ethiopian factions to defend their land. On March 1st, the Ethiopian army, vastly outnumbering the Italians, launched a fierce attack in the mountainous terrain of Adwa. Using superior knowledge of the land and strategic brilliance, the Ethiopians overwhelmed the Italians. By the end of the day, the Italian forces were decimated, and their commander captured. This victory secured Ethiopia's sovereignty and became a symbol of resistance against colonialism, inspiring other African nations in their own struggles for independence.
