Today we will explore the historical account of the Arian controversy. The Arian controversy began in the early 4th century when Arius, a priest from Alexandria, argued that Jesus Christ was a created being and not co-eternal with God the Father. This challenged the traditional view of the Trinity, sparking intense debate across the Roman Empire and creating divisions within the Church. In response, Emperor Constantine convened the First Council of Nicaea in 325 AD, where the Nicene Creed was formulated, affirming the Son's co-eternity and consubstantiality with the Father—“of one substance.” However, Arianism persisted for decades, influencing regions and leading to further councils. It wasn’t until the First Council of Constantinople in 381 AD that Arianism was officially declared heretical, solidifying the Trinity as a central tenet of Christian doctrine.
