Video - Seydi Ali Reis: The Ottoman Sailor's Journey
Seydi Ali Reis encountered the 34-piece Portuguese fleet on the coast of South Arabia. Despite the storm and the fierce enemy attack, he was able to arrive in front of Demen Castle. After the three ships that ran aground here, he went to Ahmedabad, the capital of Gujarat, with the remaining six ships. Realizing that he could not cross the Suez, Seydi Ali Reis sold the ships and ammunition to the ruler of Gujarat and sent the money to Istanbul and lived outside the Ottoman country for three years. Later, he came to Istanbul by land via India, Afghanistan, Turkestan, Azerbaijan and Iran. He turned this trip into a work called Mir'atü'l-Memalik. When he returned to Istanbul in 1557, he was responsible for a ruined navy, but he was not considered guilty because of the extraordinary events that happened to him. First, the details were made. Then Diyarbakır Tımar Treasurer was appointed. He worked in the service of Prince Selim for a while. Galata Hassa became one of the ship captains. Seydi Ali Reis died in Istanbul in 1562. Seydi Ali Reis has various works in the fields of geography, astronomy and mathematics. One of his works is called Muhit and the other is called Mir'atü'l-Kâinât. He also translated Ali Kuşçu's work on astronomy into Turkish. Seydi Ali Reis's works also attracted attention in Europe and were translated into German.
