Did you know that Brazil was once a monarchy? The country was ruled by emperors from 1822 to 1889, with Dom Pedro I and Dom Pedro II reigning as monarchs. In 1808, the Portuguese royal family fled to Brazil to escape Napoleon's invasion, making Rio de Janeiro the only royal capital outside of Europe. Dom Pedro I declared Brazil's independence from Portugal in 1822, becoming the country's first emperor. However, the monarchy was overthrown in 1889, leading to the establishment of the Republic of Brazil. What a royal rollercoaster ride in Brazilian history!
