Between the 9th and 11th centuries, the Vikings had high-quality swords called “Ulfberht”. These swords were made with a technology far ahead of its time and were engraved with the inscription “+VLFBERH+T”. Far sharper and more durable than other swords of the time, they were made of high carbon steel - a technology unknown in Europe at the time. How these swords were produced with such an advanced technique is still a mystery to historians.
