Meet Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States and one of the most iconic figures in American history. Born in a log cabin in Kentucky in 1809, Lincoln grew up in a poor family and had very little formal education. But his love for learning and self-education led him to become a successful lawyer and politician in Illinois. In 1860, Lincoln was elected President, leading the nation through its greatest moral, constitutional, and political crisis—the Civil War. He fought to preserve the Union and was determined to end slavery, signing the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863. This pivotal document declared that all slaves in Confederate states were to be set free.
