Did you know that the Statue of Liberty wasn't always destined for New York? Originally, Lady Liberty was intended as a gift for Egypt to stand at the entrance of the Suez Canal! Designed by the French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, she was meant to be a robed peasant woman holding a lantern, guiding ships through the canal. But when Egypt couldn't afford the pricey project, Bartholdi repurposed the design for America. He swapped the lantern for a torch and voilà - she ended up enlightening New York Harbor instead.
