Ice Cube began his music career as a member of C.I.A., a hip-hop trio formed during the mid-80s. He later joined N.W.A. in 1987, contributing heavily to their groundbreaking debut album, "Straight Outta Compton," released in 1988. His aggressive and reality-based lyrics helped define the gangsta rap genre. Disputes over royalty arrangements led Ice Cube to leave N.W.A. in 1989. He launched his solo career with the album "AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted" in 1990, which was both a commercial and critical success.
