In the 16th century, Polish and Lithuanian armies invaded the west. In the 17th century, war between the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth (Poland and Lithuania) and the Tsardom of Russia left the lands east of the Dnieper River under Russian imperial control. The east became known as the 'Left Bank' of Ukraine, while the lands west of the Dnieper, or 'Right Bank', were at the behest of Poland.
