June 6 to August 30, 1944: The Battle of Normandy, commonly known as D-Day, begins with American, British, and Canadian troops landing on five beaches in Normandy, France, in one of the largest amphibious invasions in military history. On June 6, Omaha Beach sees intense fighting and heavy losses, with over 2,000 American casualties and around 4,000 deaths on the day. Despite these setbacks, by June 11, the Allies secure the beaches and establish a foothold, with more than 325,000 troops landed. The campaign progresses as Allied forces push across Normandy, leading to the liberation of Paris and marking a significant step in the push to defeat Nazi Germany.
