Video - Courage at Chojnice: The Battle of September 1st, 1939
Chojnice, September 1st, 1939. The air thrums with tension as Poland braces for the German onslaught. Suddenly, the sky erupts with the screech of Stuka dive bombers, heralding the start of a fierce battle. Colonel Majewski's brave Polish defenders stand resolute, guarding this vital communications hub against the advancing German 20th Motorized Infantry. The fate of Army Pomorze's southern flank hangs in the balance. From dawn to dusk, the Poles repel wave after wave of German attacks. They thwart an armored train assault and destroy a crucial bridge, denying the enemy easy passage. In a dramatic turn, the 18th Pomeranian Uhlan Regiment charges forth on horseback at Krojanty, buying precious time for their comrades to retreat. This valiant cavalry attack becomes a symbol of Polish courage in the face of overwhelming odds. The words of Polish war hero Witold Pilecki ring true: "I've tried to live my life so that in the hour of my death I would rather feel joy, than fear."
