Did you know that Brazil was once a monarchy? The country was ruled by an emperor, Dom Pedro II, until 1889 when Brazil became a republic. Speaking of monarchs, Brazil also had a pirate queen named Maria Quitéria who fought against the Portuguese during the Brazilian War of Independence. Another interesting fact is that Brazil has the largest Japanese population outside of Japan.
