January 17 to May 18, 1944: The Battle of Monte Cassino begins as Allied forces advance through Italy toward Rome, targeting the heavily fortified Gustav Line held by the Axis at the mountain town of Monte Cassino. The town is home to a historic Benedictine abbey founded in 524 A.D., which both sides agree will remain protected and not used in military operations. Despite this, Allied bombers attack the abbey, resulting in its destruction and significant public outcry. The ruins are subsequently used by German forces as a defensive position. On May 18, Polish troops capture the abbey, paving the way for the Allies to secure Rome shortly thereafter. The battle represents a significant step in the Allied campaign in Italy.
