Sleeping Beauty Once upon a time there was a king and a queen. Day after day they said to each other, “Oh, if only we could have a child!” But nothing happened. One day, while the queen was bathing, a frog came out of the water, crawled to the edge and said, “Your wish will be granted. Before a year has passed, you will give birth to a daughter.” The frog’s prediction came true and the queen gave birth to a very beautiful girl. To celebrate, the king held a great banquet and invited many guests. Thirteen witches from the kingdom came, but since there were only twelve golden plates, one witch was left out. Vengeful, the witch who had been left out decided to take revenge and cursed, “When the king’s daughter turns fifteen, she will prick her finger on a needle and fall down dead!” One of the witches who heard the curse, however, was in time to soften it and said: “The king’s daughter will not die, she will fall into a deep sleep that will last a hundred years.” The king, trying to protect his daughter, made all the needles in the kingdom disappear, leaving only one left. As predicted, one fine day, at the age of fifteen, the princess pricked her finger on the remaining needle and fell into a deep sleep. Many years passed and a series of princes tried to rescue the princess from her deep sleep without success. Until one day, a brave prince, motivated to reverse the spell, went to meet the beautiful princess. When he finally managed to enter the room where the princess was sleeping, he bent down and kissed her. Just then, the one hundred-year period had expired, and he was finally successful. It was in this way that the princess woke up. The wedding of the two was celebrated with lots of doves and the two lovers lived happily ever after.
