Video - 1904 Olympic Marathon Madness: Heat, Hijinks, and Hitchhiking!
Did you know that the 1904 Olympic Marathon in St. Louis was an absolute circus? The race was a disaster from start to finish. First, organizers thought it would be a great idea to hold the marathon in the sweltering midday heat, with temperatures reaching over 90 degrees Fahrenheit. There were only two water stations on the 24.85-mile course, leading to severe dehydration among runners. One competitor, a Cuban mailman named Felix Carvajal, showed up in street clothes and took breaks to snack on apples from spectator orchards. Another runner, Fred Lorz, hitched a ride in a car for 11 miles before being disqualified. How’s that for a wild ride? What do you think would be the craziest thing to happen in a modern marathon?
